Active citizenship for British citizenship?

July 25, 2008 by Webmaster

The Home Office is setting up a working group, including voluntary organisations and local authorities, to advise the Government on how to speed up the citizenship applications for people who become ‘active citizens’. The recently published draft Immigration and Citizenship Bill includes measures for citizenship applications to be speeded up for people who show they are contributing to the community. The Home Office said volunteering would not be compulsory, but would “incentivise an outlook and attitude which we think is positive for Britain”.

A Mori poll carried out for the Home Office found that only 48% of people thought that taking part in community activities should speed up a citizenship application. Respondents who opposed the idea felt that voluntary activities should not be ‘forced’ on people and that it would be discriminatory to make probationary citizens participate in voluntary activities if most British citizens do not make this contribution to society.
