The Centre Project

In January 1996 the Centre Project opened its doors with the aim to:

Serve people who are lonely, vulnerable, unemployed, isolated, socially disadvantaged or mentally frail who live in city accommodation or frequent the city centre.

Promote the successful independence of residents who still experience the long-term effects of homelessness by giving support to ensure a continuum of care, so that there is a clear route from the streets to a settled way of life by helping them develop new social contacts and skills.

Maintain ‘The Centre’ as a place where people come to:

  • Meet people
  • Prevent boredom
  • Prevent isolation
  • Learn new skills
  • Increase confidence
  • Find employment

Promote activities that encourage greater self-esteem and enjoyment of life, enhance social and life skills, employment prospects, mental and physical health.

Research carried out by Central Baptist Church revealed a lack of support for resettled homeless people. There was perceived need for a decent place in which these city residents could have present needs met and where support was available to enable them adjust to the changed circumstances that re-housing brought. The Centre Project was started to address this need.
