Community Education and Training Services
August 28, 2008 by Webmaster
Aqoon Community Education and Training Services(ACETS) was established by five Somali professionals to support the education and integration of newly arrived families, helping to settle children into the UK education system and to promote social inclusion.
This is achieved through homework study study clubs and family learning activities. Basic skills training is provided for Somali adults and the project also helps familiarise parents with the UK education system so they can better support their children.
Extra tuition weekend classes are offered for key stage 2 (years 3-6) in English, Maths and Science because many children arrive in the UK without good level of English.
ACETS enriches social skills and better understanding of the environment by organising educational trips, sporting activities and other social events, enhancing the sense of belonging in multi-cultural Leicester.
Co-operative and Social Enterprise Development Agency (CaSE-da) has been working with ACETS since 2003 and has helped them with an appropriate legal structure, finance, human resources and other business issues.
Abdishakur Tarah feels that an important aspect of the support from CaSE-da is the belief the agency had in ACETS and this encouragementnraised the confidence of the group to work hard and achieve success in their ambition.
With the continued support from CaSE-da the success and growth of ACETS has led to a Service Level Agreement contract with Leicester City Council for this much needed supplement school and homework club.
