Black History Season 2011

October 3, 2011 by Webmaster · Leave a Comment

Dear All
Black History Month is upon us. When asked about the purpose of Black History Month, the former Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone stated the following: “In order to enrich the cultural diversity of the Greater London area, it is imperative that Londoners know more about African influences on medieval and renaissance European music so that accepted ideas about European music is changed. Despite the significant role that Africa and its Diaspora have played in the world civilization since the beginning of time, Africa’s contribution has been omitted or distorted in most history books.”
If you extend both the geographical focus (to include the whole of the country) and the thematic reference (to all areas of life in addition to music), the significance and importance of Black History Month to all of us, not just those in our African and Caribbean communities is all too apparent.
There are numerous events taking place in the local area. Some of the events (such as the seminars organised by The Race Equality Centre) have been highlighted in previous emails. There is also a link for your information (http://www.theraceequalitycentre.org.uk/latestnews/sep2011/black-history-season.html). Leicester City Council have a dedicated space on their website devoted to Black History Season 2011, which is well worth a look. Go to http://www.leicester.gov.uk/blackhistoryseason/. There is also a Facebook site (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=258846150813638&ref=nf).
Every best wish,
Julian

Accessing the NHS in Britain’s most diverse city

March 16, 2011 by Webmaster · Leave a Comment

Variables of difference in ethnicity, immigration status, rights and entitlements, age and gender profiles and patterns of distribution of new migrants mean that the UK is now home to the most diverse population ever experienced – so-called ‘super-diversity’. Super-diversity challenges multicultural models of welfare provision originally based on an understanding of migrants as large and geographically contained clusters of mainly postcolonial migrants. These changes come at a time when migration has become politicized, multiculturalism is being questioned, a shift is under way towards assimilation and welfare provision has become re-racialized. This paper argues that models of welfare provision should be rethought to take account of super-diversity in a way that is affordable, politically acceptable and meets the needs of all. Using data from studies of health service provision in the West Midlands the paper explores the challenges of meeting the needs of new migrants under existing provision, the costs of failing to adapt to super-diversity and the reasons why provision has failed to adapt.

The paper concludes by arguing the need for different approaches and suggesting new ways forward.

As they sit in skittle-neat rows, smartly dressed in their Royal blue uniform, they look like any regular group of children brought together for the school photo.

But this gathering of youngsters symbolises an extraordinary linguistic melting pot, since they represent nearly 50 of the 70 or so languages spoken at the Manchester Academy in Moss Side.

By Les Back

Asylum seekers’ experiences are uncomfortably close to a dark recent past that spawned the EU ideal.

The European commission’s enthusiasm for “diversity talk” is connected to an admirable yearning to see Europe as a place of refuge to those facing persecution.
