THE Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) held a workshop for journalists earlier this month.

It was organised in light of the commission’s recent Not Just Another Statistic research into the experiences of some of the people most likely to encounter discrimination: gypsy travellers, asylum seekers and refugees, transgender people and people with a mental health condition.

Given the role of the media in shaping public attitudes, the workshop had been organised to see how portrayal of these groups could be improved.

When it comes to mental ill health, we know many people are concerned the media perpetuates damaging stereotypes and contributes to the stigma and discrimination people experience in their day-to-day lives.

Alexandria J.Innes

Abstract:

Asylum seekers can be considered some of the most vulnerable people in the world, yet this article demonstrates that in advanced industrialized states, exemplified by the UK, they are constructed as a homogeneous collective that threatens state interests. This article examines the construction of asylum seekers as a threat that is evident in British narratives. Building on works by critical security scholars, this article examines the process that led to asylum seekers being portrayed as a threat in the UK. The empirical research focuses on narratives that give insight into sentiments towards asylum seekers in the UK. Government policy, political statements and the mass media are considered. The nature of the threat examined is threefold and takes into account traditional security studies, economic or subsistence security and societal identity security.

A massive programme of events has been rolled out by Citizens Eye for the Community Media Week in November starting from the Monday 8th to Saturday the 13th 2010.

Various media events are lined up throughout the city and county as a way of showcasing and celebrating the important role that community media plays by making available, news that would normally be shunned by mainstream media.

In addition to the print media, there will also be regular updates and interviews live on community internet and FM radio stations. The most interesting aspect of community media is that it relies on a team of community reporters who cover events within their own communities regarding issues of particular importance.

Each day of the community media week is packed with a variety of activities that makes the whole programme quite interesting. For citizens who are keen to give their local communities a voice by promoting information sharing through news gathering and reporting then this is an event not to be missed.

There is everything for everyone, young and old, whether experienced or not. The joy of community media is that it is within reach, especially of those so called hard to reach communities simply because it is community based.

For those seeking to gain new skills or a career change altogether, community reporting could be a good starting point. Information regarding training workshops offered for free by Citizens Eye Editors and other guest media practitioners will be available throughout the week. This is a must event for those who have their communities at heart.

Details of the whole event and for each day can be accessed on the Citizens eye website at www.citizenseye.org. Get involved and give your area the news coverage it deserves.
