Award-winning law volunteers are a fragile life-line

Welsh Refugee Council congratulates the Welsh voluntary organisation Asylum Justice on winning first prize in the national United Reformed Church Community Project Awards.

Asylum Justice, which is run entirely by volunteers, has been providing free legal advice for refused asylum seekers in Wales for several years. It works in Cardiff, Swansea and Newport. Asylum Justice is led by retired barrister Roger Warren-Evans. Other volunteers include law students and practicing lawyers offering free time.

Asylum Justice was set up when a church-based support group for asylum seekers realised that the greatest unmet need is legal advice.

Royal recognition for refugee and asylum seeker volunteers

Volunteers working with refugees and asylum seekers have received a prestigious award from the Duke of Gloucester.

British Red Cross refugee services in Portsmouth was honoured for its work helping people who have escaped persecution to adapt to life in the UK.

The refugee services team was recognised yesterday in a ceremony at All Saints Church in Commercial Road, Portsmouth, where they are based, in front of city dignitaries including The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Paula Riches.

Involving Refugees through Volunteering at Leicester Libraries

Urban Forum by the Equality and Human Rights Commission published a case study in April based on interviews with Leicester City Council’s Senior Community Librarian and a refugee who volunteers for Leciester Libraries.

Leicester Libraries have been working to involve refugees and asylum seekers in service development since 2001. Starting from a consultation exercise with asylum seekers about their information and stock requirements, the work took shape with the creation of a post in 2005 dedicated to service development and community involvement.

Time was invested into relationship-building with refugee organisations, and developing a refugee volunteer programme. This has led to a range of initiatives to involve the community, based at the library, including a partnership from 2008 with a community media social enterprise, Citizens’ Eye, and Hatnews, an associated news agency dedicated to refugee and asylum issues.

Hot Buffet Treat for Leicester Libraries Volunteers

The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Roger Blackmore and his wife the Lady Mayoress, held a hot buffet reception in honour of library volunteers on Tuesday 16th February 2010 at the Town hall in Leicester.  Those in attendance were volunteers drawn from different sections of the community.

IRR Looking for Volunteers

The Institute of Race Relations News Service is looking for volunteers (one-day or a half-day per week) to help in gathering information and writing original news stories on race and refugee issues in the UK. Applicants should be familiar with the output of the news service, have good written English and be committed to the aims of the IRR.
